Brain picking Oily questions, Empty
PostSubject: Brain picking Oily questions,   Brain picking Oily questions, EmptyTue 7 Aug - 23:49

Oil catch cans - I am new to Impreza's so having to learn fast. I would like a 3 inlet catch can rather than 2. I also dont think i want a drain to sump on it. Am i right in thinking that i need to spend silly money for a 3 port inlet can ? Ive saw a few home brewed affiars which i like and appear to work well, are they any do's and dont's for this, do they need to be baffled or is it just margainally better if they are ?

Sump pans - Same again really, a good baffled sump is mad money ( I know quality is not cheap ) However, has anyone made their own again ? I made on for my 205gti and my off-road L200 and it worked well enough ( not engine failures ) so though i could kind of apply the same method ?

The carbon canister ( front OSF near ABS ) Can i remove this and clear myself some extra space there or is it advisable to leave fitted ?

Has anyone removed the ABS system rather than just fuse pulling ?

First of all what model do you have?

Catch can-
Yes you can use a 3 inlet but remember you can just t piece the heads together and save yourself some money.
I have used a few in the past and to be honest on a good engine they catch very little on an impreza, I used it to prevent oil vapour from going back into the inlet tract and reducing fuel octane when I was chasing horsepower. to do this I added a filter to the outlet instead of running it back to the inlet.
Have never used a drain to sump, yes a baffled one is much better as it helps oil vapour drop out.
Make sure you empty it regularly as the do fill up with water vapour quickly.

Sump pans-
The standard pan is fine for road use, for track/racing they are a good idea, have a word with Alyn at AS performance in Birtley, he supplies modified sumps for rallying, even if you just get a look at it to make your own.

Carbon canister-
I assume its a classic, if so yes you can remove it and blank off all the pipework.

ABS-
Never removed the ABS but it shouldn't be too hard, some of the early classics and type RA and type R's came without ABS so you could get the parts needed from one of those to do the job right.

I got mine from Spec r, £60 inc postage,
its a 1ltr baffled tank, you can also stipulate the number of inlets & sizes of them. The quality is A+. Good value for money for a baffled tank IMO.

Yeah its a classic GC8 1998 Turbo 2000 thingy.

Catch can - Ive just saw your post maxboost, that can looks very nice and has the 3 inlets. I know i could 'T' and use a 2 port tank as they are fairly cheap off good old EBAY and look half decent.

Sump - Going to ring Alyn and have a word regarding them sumps, see what they can do.

Carbon canister - Do i just remove and bung up the pipework or is it best to do something else with it ?

ABS - I was just presuming it's a case of knock up a few new brake lines and maybe add a bias valve.

Did you fit any bias valves or just remove ABS and new pipe from master cylinder to the wheels ?

Well, after abit time has lapsed i have a few more questions for those 'in the know' ...

1) New age PAS - Whtas the difference/how is it better than Classis PAS ?

2) V3/V4 inlet manifold all the same throughout range, UK Turbo/WRX/STi ?

3) Whats so good about V3/V4 Sti heads to want to use on stroker builds ?

Yeah the manifolds on the v3/4 are all the same, the v3 sti heads have wild cams as standard, v4 are still good but not as wild as v3, both are a lot better than uk heads for power.
