| You can if you wish, manifolds/headers are hard to make look neat and tidy when wrapped. | |

| personally not a lover ov heat wrap on headers.... seen a subaru burst into flames due too heat wrap subaru in question had a leaky power steering pump (common fault on classics) and soaked heat wrap (on headers) and one day after a good mammering it set fire | |

| Wrap the headers
The only heat wrap you would ever see bursting into flames is the eBay guff (or if you're a window licker and decide to seal it with a Hammerite rattle can as I've also seen in the past). Buy good quality wrap such as DEI or the stuff Alyn at ASP uses (as did Harvey) and you will never have any issues.
Takes a few practise runs to get it right, but well worth it once you do.
If you can get the parts to me over a weekend I will wrap them for you if you buy the bits.

| You are rightly concerned about heat in the engine bay. If it was ok, Subaru wouldn't have bothered fitting heat shields. Even with OE heat shields heat soak is still an issue...
I've not long since re-wrapped my headers, up pipe and downpipe, will post some pics for you to see the standard achieved. Takes time, but a job well worth doing properly (with the right heat wrap).
In the snow on standard headers, up pipe and un-wrapped bellmouth downpipe, the area above the turbo always melted away long before the rest of the bonnet cleared. After installing the wrapped Harvey headers and up pipe, along with wrapping the downpipe and installing a DEI turbo blanket with the new turbo, all of the snow melts away at the same time. Also allows for much better gains when mapping as the ignition can be advanced more than a hot engine bay car.
I know 3 people who have had to put new wiring looms in their cars after installing tubular headers without any heat protection, which melted the wiring. I know of another who had a serious engine bay fire after the bare headers melted through the oil lines he was running to a cooler in the front bumper.
With the standard Subaru top mount intercooler, heat management is even more critical. More so if you are running an induction kit.

| Very smart, think I will have them done, asked Andy Forrest about re-mapping the Subaru van and he has said that my ecu can be mapped, so it will be a worth while mod . Just got away from Off-roading and all the costs that involved and straight into another money pit car hobby, | |

| Stripped the old wrap off and wire brushed the headers and downpipe back to a smooth finish. Gave them all 2 coats of DEI high temp silicone sealant. Re-wrapped using stainless zip ties and then sealed the wrap with another 2 coats of the silicone sealant. Only pics I can find on my phone, but you get the idea.... Got a few pictures of the sealed headers on the pc which I can dig out if needs be. I put another half a dozen more stainless zip ties on the headers after that photo to finish the job. Would strongly recommend sealing the wrap, will extend the life of it no end as it stops salt spray and grime attacking the wrap. Took about 5 hours not including the baking of the parts to cure the sealant. | |
