Actually mine sometimes does that. It's on my list of things to fix. When I work it out I'll let you know!

Any cel lights thrown up ?

Ask one of the guys to put a code reader on it and see if anything comes up (johnny has one and a few of the other guys)

im sure someone else will have had the same fault at some point and should be able to advise!

Had the same trouble with me classic few weeks ago, bought a new MAF, but was not needed, eventually found out it was a water temp sensor. As the ecu was getting the wrong reading, the mix was all wrong, was ok when revs were up,but when you pulled up to traffic lights or to park felt like it was going to cut out,new sensor fitted by Dr Kindon and been spot on since, could be wrong but only couple of quid to buy.

Yep, that is a sign of a faulty water temp sensor.

If it is a faulty temp sensor you may get starting problems and/or excessive fuel usage due to the sensor sending the wrong signal to the ECU.

I am amazed it's still on the original battery!!!

The sensor won't make it slow to turn over but will make it harder to start and turn over for longer if it is sending a signal to the ECU with a higher temp value.

This will also cause the revs to drop too low.
