I wouldn't spray anything into the air intake incase it picks up....

Remove the egr valve and clean it, check the mechanicals are ok. A common issue is a failed egr valve will put airflow problems up and people chase the airflow issue as the problem and not a symptom.

If it's anything like my vectra it will be caked full of crap, I took egr valve, manifold and valve flaps all off car and cleaned it all with mr muscle oven cleaner! Car feels brand new now, the holes for valve flaps were less than half the size there meant to be because of the build up! Shocked you need to give these diesels a good thrashing every now and then to help clean crap out  Very Happy

The swirl flaps are a pain as they don't get used much and seize up so first time they get open the pop the rod off and they are a pain. You can get modified gaskets for them to cure some issues using the Fiat part numbers over the Vaux numbers.

The 1300 Diesel engine can be a pain in the bum to work on regarding EGr mind,
