What year of car?

If i remember some have a power booster for the ariel that needs power from the head unit

You need to tap the antenna wire into a power wire as with an aftermarket stereo there isn't any power going to the antenna. I can't remember exactly which wire it is think its the blue wire tapped into the white switch wire. I'm literally about to do this now I'll let you know which wires it is exactly. All I did last time was strip the wires and tap one into the other then just tape it up.

As the others have said, newage Imprezas have a powered aerial. On my wagon it's part of the nearside rear window, not sure where it is on a saloon.

Some aftermarket head units already have this built in - luckily mine did but it sounds like yours might not have. I'm 90% sure the power antenna connection is a blue wire on an iso harness. This will need to be connected to an ignition live wire so that it doesn't stay on all the time and flatten the battery. Basically just agreeing with chrisw above.

Yep blue wire tapped into white wire from the harness coming from the car. Done it this afternoon and worked fine able to get all the usual stations now
