PostSubject: TD05 18G turbo build   TD05 18G turbo build EmptyFri 6 May - 18:02

Right, being a right pikey an not wanting to spend an absolute fortune on a new TD05 18G turbo I decided to build my own TD05 18G.

I found a half decent 90 degree TD05 16G turbo from a member on here at a good price (£50), it had a tiny bit play in the shaft but nothing too excessive.

I looked at a rebuild kit- [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

so ordered one of these (£50 inc delivery), it came in 2 days so not a bad deal at all.

I now needed a 18G compressor wheel and straight entry cover so got one of these (£150 inc delivery)- [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

here is my standard td05 16g (small) compressor wheel along side my new 18g compressor wheel-

Rebuilding the core was relatively easy using this youtube guide-

part 2- [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

After that I looked at fitting the new 18G compressor wheel to the turbo shaft I found the back plate has a groove cut out for the compressor to sit in, this was only big enough for the 16G compressor wheel, I got a local machine shop to enlarge the groove to the size of the new 18G compressor wheel adding an extra 1mm clearance for expansion. £20

......and here it is, a fully overhauled TD05 18G turbo for the grand sum of £270 cheers

Yep as Andy says it will flow enough air to supply my 2.5 with enough boost up top.

Also if I decide I want more its a nice easy job to bolt on a 20G compressor wheel and cover Cool

At work in the morning Dave but will be in after 11:30am, if you are passing you can just leave it behind the bin till I get in Wink

Andy, yeah the compressor wheel comes ready balanced.

Bit turbo flow info for ya (CFM= volume of air the turbo can flow in Cubic Feet per Minute)-

IHI VF-22 435 CFM at 1.0 BAR (largest compressor wheel fitted to the VF series turbos)

TD05 Small 16G 505 CFM at 1.0 BAR (standard Subaru 16G)

TD05 Large 16G 550 CFM at 1.0 BAR

TD05 18G 600 CFM at 1.0 BAR

TD05 20G 650 CFM at 1.0 BAR

This is not by any means the be all and end all of turbo performance but its a pretty good indicator.
