Right, 2002 WRX has done 6300 since its last service, is on 103000 miles. The other day when I dipped the oil it was just above the minimum so I put a small amount in to take it back up to the right level.
This morning the Handbrake light stayed on as I set off. Obviously I checked the handbrake, which definitely wasnt on. I called the mrs who confirmed there was no oil where the car had been parked. After 3 miles of driving through town it went off. It came back on for about half a mile and then was fine for the next 25 miles that I drove it. The car drives perfectly (ignoring the clutch being on its way) no undue smells, etc. No EML.
What is wrong?

So is it hanbrake light or oil light mate? If it hanbrake light check your pads as my classic shows very similar if pads are low

Thats why I was putting the question marks on oil light, on a lot of cars the handbrak light is also the low oil light. It is the handbrake light that was on, i.e. red circle with an exclamation mark in it.

brake fluid is just above minimum so think it is this causing the light

Cheers Jonny, looks like that may be the problem. Is there a cause behind low fluid levels other than a potential leak? Is a leak likely or would the pressure behind it mean that it would all pump out quite quickly?

When your pads wear down the fluid level drops.
