Engine clean - Let the engine run for a couple of minutes just so it warms up a bit. Then what I did was garden hose the entire engine bay gently and then sprayed Meguiars Engine Clean all over the engine bay (it's about £7/£8 a bottle). You just spray it all over the engine bay and use a soft brush to agitate it. Then give it a good rinse off with the hose. Then you use the Meguiars Engine Dress - another spray all over the engine bay and shut the bonnet and leave for about 15 mins. After that you just dry off with microfibre cloths/rags and job done. For my alternator that was black with oil & grease I just sprayed some standard clutch & brake cleaner on a cloth/rag and wiped the oil & grease off. Don't spray this stuff (clutch & brake cleaner) direct on the engine.

You won't get it all done first time. It usually takes 2 or 3 cleans to get it as clean as you want it but the first one does get rid of a load of the dirt but not all.
