We contacted previous owners to find out who had mapped ours - turned out to be Andy Forrest which we were pleased about, rather than an 'unknown'.

If you have receipts/prev owner details send a letter to each you can find asking for info about the car with a stamped addressed envelope and most people will be happy to tell you what they know about the car.

We heard back from both the ones prior to the lad we bought the car off and Paul spoke to the lad who had had the work done.

So was well worth doing in our case.
