It's been like that since engine got rebuilt shouldn't it be down to the rebuilder to check as I did go back and tell him about the smell that was in November/December last year

possibly a split vacum or faulty purge control valve, I very much doubt u have a petrol leak, its most likely petrol fumes u are smelling as that is the area where the fuel tank breather runs too, as said before any little nigglies you have just drop car off and ill sort them for you, always happy to help  Smile

the bugs suffered from a petrol feed pipe coming loose just under the intake manifold on that side in the picture, the small fastener comes loose and the pipe leaks, your boost gauge is more than likely the sender mate,

Wasn't there, or shouldn't there have been a recall on the bugs with this problem. Sure I read it was something to do with the cold weather & some pipe contracts and fuel leaks out as a result & only gets better when the engine is warmed up & pipes have expanded again?
I'll do a search......

From SNet:
Bug eye fuel leak
