Is there any oil leaking out of your intercooler pipe work and getting onto the turbo or the exhaust ? That would cause a nasty burning smell

I couldn't really see as it was dark and I didn't have a torch so will have a look tomorrow you thinking it could be a damaged pipe or something ?

Possibly mate or it could of just worked itself loose on the compressor outlet that connects to the intercooler. Do you have a heat wrapped up pipe ? Sometimes of heat wrap gets wet it causes a burning smell too

A standard up pipe wouldn't be red bud are you not mistaking the up pipe for the inlet manifold they are red on the sti's it's the big red thing sat on top of the engine. The up pipe is the exhaust that is under the turbo

The red thing you are describing sounds like the standard red silicone pipe from the intercooler Y pipe to the turbo? Like this:

That's the turbo compressor outlet I was talking about sorry forgot that was red lol.. If that has come slightly loose then you will be getting a sleight bit of oil onto the turbo and could cause the smell. Have a look at the turbo next to the pipe and make sure its clean and give the jubalee clip a tighten anyway just to make sure its tight as you would also lose some boost if this is loose..

Could also be oil leaking from your drivers side rocker cover dripping onto your exhaust manifold or headers as they like to be called in the Subaru world.
