any ideas what this problem is

a young lad i no has a bug eye 2.0 nonturbo running lumpy revs dying then picking up all so he says is loosing power and nearly stalling some times any ideas cheers told him to take to some were like drews as have of a holes in our town have not go a clue with scoobs.

Could be a number of things mate, has it thrown up a CEL light?

yes i told him to get a computer on it,, and only to take to somewere decent as well thought id try on here first?

No MAF on the non turbo cars so most likely it will be the lambda sensor, seen this quite a few times on bugeye sports. best way to check this is disconnect it, if the problem goes away when its disconnected its the lambda.

Lambda, knock or MAP/air temp (dual sensor) would be first on my checklist. Then could be coilpack, TPS, fuel pump / regulator failure, ecu fault etc etc. Could even be something as daft as the fuel filter being clogged. As jonny says, try the lambda first by disconnecting it and hopefully it'll just be that. If it doesnt cure the problem, get the CEL code checked and go from there.
